Young women urged to acquire assets

Young women in Zvishavane are being urged to acquire land as a way to achieve economic empowerment. During a recently held young women`s political forum,

it was revealed that women are lagging behind in terms of land ownership.

Runde gender focal person, Mrs Caroline Nhokwara said that in the Runde constituency the majority of land owners are men; whilst no female has purchased land in 2021 so far.

“Records at the rural district council show that this year no woman has bought land despite many accompanying or going on behalf of their husbands.

This is quite disheartening as it indicates that in an era where women need to be economically empowered, they`re not taking the necessary steps to achieve.

“As young women, let`s strive to acquire assets of our own instead of putting the men ahead in such issues of importance,” she said.

Reiterating, Kudakwashe Mutikani a women`s rights advocate said that young women should raise above the barriers that have seen women confined to home-care for decades.

“The time is now for women to stand up for their rights and participate in issues of development. Support each other and take advantage of your power in numbers to start projects that empower you in all aspects of life.

“Gone are the days where are woman`s role was taking care of the home, there are now many opportunities for women to be empowered. Take advantage of these opportunities and get involved in bringing the change we all want,” he said.

Hands of Hope Trust in end GBV drive

Hands of Hope Trust has joined other women's rights advocacy groups based in Zvishavane in a drive to end Gender Based Violence towards women and girls.

As part of the commemoration of 16 Days of Activism Against Gender Based Violence running from 25 November to 10 December, the initiative is spearheaded by Impact Stories Zimbabwe.

Women’s Weekly Journal, Mwanasikana Wanhasi, Greatness Hub, Womandla Foundation, African Women in Mining Empowerment Trust, Bubbles Beat Beauty, Shekinah Glory Organisation, Bethany Project are together producing The Deep talk show series.

The Deep talk show is a platform to lead conversations on the various causes of GBV in homes and communities and how everyone has a role to play in ending GBV.

This fight to end GBV however goes beyond the 16 days as GBV cases continue to rise amid the Covid 19 pandemic.

Women and girls face all forms of violence especially in the mining communities of Zvishavane and Mberengwa.

HoHT Director, Millicent Nhutsve said, “We are not doing enough as communities to raise awareness against GBV hence there is need for serious collective efforts by everyone to protect our daughter, sisters, mothers, aunts and grandmothers.

We must change the narrative of what marriage or having a partner entails, it’s not about having no peace, it’s not about being emotionally or physically abused. It’s about being able to enjoy all your basic human rights as a woman.”

Let’s say 365 days against all forms of abuse, passion and ritualistic killings of women and girls in Zimbabwe and across the world.

Programs Manager Acquelline Nyere added that women shouldn’t be made to fear walking away from their abusive partners.

There is need for safe spaces for victims and survivors that are void of discrimination.

“Social beliefs and traditions that stand as barriers to girls and women’s rights must be broken down.”
